Stringent regulations for Alberta’s Tailings Ponds

Stringent regulatory actions will be enforced on Oilsands projects in Alberta’s Tailing Ponds, if reclamation targets are not met. As per officials, enforcement can range from increased audits to even shutting down of operations for repeat offenders.

Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board chairman Dan McFadyen was quoted as saying:

Many of the oilsands projects are not meeting the targets for the management of fluid fine tailings set out in their applications. This directive will set firm requirements for oilsands operators to manage their tailings – and meet those requirements – or face enforcement action.
